I Want to be a Dancer Inc.
Who we are
I Want to be a Dancer Foundation is a non for profit organization that expands cultural awareness through dance education programs and offers youth the opportunity to develop their natural inner talents, promote emotional and physical wellness, and fosters artistic and academic excellence.
Our mission
Founded in 2013, the Foundation’s mission is to enable more youth to experience and benefit from the power of dance- utilizing dance as a pathway to success.
WHY WE Dance?
A growing body of research indicates that involvement in the arts is a potent tool for engaging children and youth in unique ways and fostering their personal and artistic growth and development. Active involvement in the arts has been demonstrated to increase participants’ socio-emotional development, academic achievement, and civic engagement.
The arts immerse youth in an environment that develops their capacity for and mastery of 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and flexibility. Arts learning also collides youth with opportunities to develop many other important life skills such as resilience, courage, and grit. They work persistently toward achieving medium- and long-term goals such as performances and mastering specific dance moves, routines, and proper technique. Last, the process of learning dance requires that youth learn to cope with and overcome setbacks along the path to mastery while experiencing the joy of self-expression, performance, and collaborating with others.
Who we serve
The Foundation’s primary audience is children and youth in elementary through high school who typically would not have access to performing arts training due to economic or other barriers. We have expertise at engaging a diverse range of children and youth including any level of dance experience/fitness level as well as those with special needs.
Our Founder
Daysi Cepeda began dancing at the age of six and never looked back. She is an acclaimed dance professional who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance and Liberal Art Studies from Florida International University and an Associate’s Degree in Psychology from Miami Dade College (MDC). She also established the I Want to Be a Dancer Foundation in 2013 to underwrite scholarships and provide structured arts enrichment programs to the community of young dancers who could not otherwise afford to take part in dance. She opened Creativo Dance Studio in 2015 as a platform to give back and help those who fell in love with performing and dance, just as she had when she was younger. Her tireless passion has helped grow the studio into one of the most well-known in the Miami area.
In addition to her work at Creativo Dance Studio, Cepeda was an Adjunct Professor and contractor at Miami Dade College. She was also a key contributor to the development of various Dance Programs for the community and Miami Dade College’s Department of Community Education. She channels her extensive experience combining community with dance and education, particularly through her signature outreach programs, plus choreographing, producing, and directing dozens of performances during the course of her 25-year career.
“Dance is not a competition… It is an art, it’s a passion.”
– Daysi Cepeda
